A young male orangutan makes the 30-metre (100-foot) climb up the thickest root of the strangler fig that has entwined itself around a tree emerging high above the canopy. The backdrop is the rich rainforest of the Gunung Palung National Park, in West Kalimantan, one of the few protected orangutan strongholds in Indonesian Borneo.
When I decided to have my ageing IIIc and 50mm Summitar restored my first thought was a trip to see MalcolmTaylor. I had read about his work and his world-wide reputation, but I didn’t realise what a fascinating story he had to tell during my visit.

Ever since I was little I’ve always been extremely competitive. It was this competitive nature which got me into photography. Once a year in my early teens, we would have family holiday. My stepdad was tasked with capturing the images from these trips, so he would be seen flaunting his expensive looking film camera everywhere we went!
My daughter Mia has always been super strong, I remember when she was three I lifted her up onto a pull-up bar at a friends house, where she immediately commenced with pull-ups at a rate which astonished us all! Raised eyebrows and side-ways glances all round!
When I was very young my dad took lots of photos. I remember he used our bathroom as a dark room. We had boxes of photos and I’d spend hours looking at them. I have always been quite creative and since I had my own camera I kept taking lots of photographs..
