A Thoughtful Week of Photography in Southern France

Early summer in the south of France offers something rare — long evenings, softer light, and space to work without pressure. The French Experience is built around that rhythm.

This is not a fast-paced tour or a checklist of locations. Instead, we focus on working carefully in visually rich settings — from the medieval streets of Carcassonne to quieter surrounding landscapes — with time to observe, adjust, and refine your approach.

Throughout the week, you’ll receive personal guidance designed to help you strengthen composition, use light more deliberately, and develop confidence in your decision-making — whether you shoot portraits, travel, street, or landscape.

Below you’ll find the full workshop outline, what’s included, and how to reserve your place.

The French Experience is suited to photographers who want to slow down and work more deliberately.

You do not need to be a professional. The workshop is ideal for enthusiastic photographers who are comfortable with the basics of their camera and want to develop stronger composition, better use of light, and greater creative confidence.

If you enjoy:

  • Working thoughtfully rather than rushing

  • Exploring characterful locations at a steady pace

  • Receiving personal, practical guidance

  • Returning home with images that feel intentional

…then this workshop will suit you well.

Whether you use a mirrorless, DSLR, or compact system, the emphasis is not on equipment but on seeing more clearly and responding to what is in front of you.

Group numbers are kept intentionally small to ensure individual attention throughout the week.

The French Experience Photo Workshop – Domaine des Jasses Edition

Please note: the following represents a selection of possible shooting scenarios.

Immerse yourself in a week of photographic exploration in one of France’s most evocative medieval regions. The French Experience Photo Workshop brings together editorial portraiture, fashion-inspired concepts, street aesthetics, and creative night photography, all set against the atmospheric backdrops of Carcassonne and its surrounding countryside. Each location is chosen for its character, authenticity, and photographic potential.

A Full Day at Château Belflou
One of the signature experiences of the workshop is a dedicated day shooting at the magnificent Château Belflou. This genuine medieval château offers imposing architecture, sweeping grounds, and a wealth of textures—from stone stairways to timeless interior spaces. Here, you will explore both fashion and portrait concepts, working with professional models in an environment that elevates every frame. The château provides a rare opportunity to create images that are refined, atmospheric, and truly unforgettable.

Editorial Portraits in the Old Streets of Carcassonne
Back in the city, Carcassonne’s narrow alleys, arches, and historic façades set the stage for contemporary portraiture. Working in small groups, you will develop your skills in directing models, controlling natural light, and crafting visual narrative.

Natural Light, Harsh Sun, and Shadow Control
Carcassonne offers a variety of lighting challenges. You will learn how to manage hard sunlight, open shade, and mixed conditions using reflectors, diffusers, and practical positioning to consistently produce clean, intentional images.

Evening and Night Photography
As evening falls, the workshop shifts into the illuminated streets and squares of the lower town. Gambetta Square provides elegant architecture and reflective water features perfect for long exposure, cinematic portraits, and creative use of ambient light. Elevated viewpoints overlooking the Cité offer dramatic night-time silhouettes and glowing castle vistas.

Creative Flash and Motion Techniques
A paparazzi-style session introduces high-energy shooting with on-camera flash. Additional exercises explore shutter drag, rear-curtain sync, light movement, and mixed-light compositions that add dynamism and atmosphere to your portfolio.

Styled Fashion Concepts on Location
Across the week, two to three themed fashion or editorial concepts will be produced, using props and styling sourced to complement both the city environment and the château setting. These sessions help refine your approach to posing, storytelling, and the overall visual direction of your photography.

Castle Views and Architectural Vistas
Carcassonne’s viewpoints—particularly along Rue du Pont—serve as exceptional locations for both portraits and wide environmental compositions. The illuminated Cité provides a world-class backdrop for evening shoots.

Classic Car Session (Subject to Availability)
If confirmed, a dedicated session with a vintage Citroën adds a cinematic layer to the workshop—combining timeless styling, elegant lines, and the historic streetscape.

Light Painting and Night Creativity
A late-evening session encourages experimentation with light painting, controlled smoke (weather permitting), shutter drag, and creative flash techniques to expand the expressive range of your night photography.

Our Approach

The French Experience is based at Domaine des Jasses, a distinctive and character-filled estate set within a landscape that feels timeless and untouched.

Throughout the week, we work within the Domaine and its surroundings, using its interiors, grounds and natural light to create a diverse portfolio of portrait, fashion and location-based images. The setting allows for a more considered approach, with time to shape ideas, work with intention and develop stronger, more refined photographs.

A highlight of the week is our full-day visit to Château Belflou, offering expansive grounds and uninterrupted creative space.

Our focus remains unchanged: exceptional photographic experiences, inspiring locations, and a supportive environment to help you create your strongest work.
