Photography at Château La Commanderie

Château La Commanderie will be at the heart of the week.

Built in the 13th century and later becoming a commanderie of the Knights of Malta, the château offers an extraordinary variety of photographic possibilities.

Its period rooms, antique furnishings, artwork, stairways and architectural details provide atmospheric settings for classical portraits, fashion-inspired concepts and contemporary editorial photography.

Rather than limiting our time at the château to a single visit, we will be able to work throughout its interiors and grounds during the week, returning to particular locations as the light changes and new ideas develop.

Historic Interiors

The château’s magnificent Knights’ Hall, library, billiard room, salons and individually styled bedrooms each have their own distinctive character.

These richly detailed interiors will allow us to explore classical portraiture, cinematic lighting and more contemporary editorial concepts.

You will learn how to position a model within a complex setting, work with natural window light and use the existing architecture to strengthen your compositions.

Portraits in the Château Gardens

Château La Commanderie is surrounded by extensive private parkland and landscaped gardens.

Tree-lined areas, pathways, stone walls, open lawns and secluded corners provide natural settings for relaxed portraiture and styled fashion concepts.

The grounds will also allow us to explore backlighting, reflected light, movement and the softer light found early and late in the day.

Styled Photoshoots with Two Models

Throughout the week, our two professional models will work with a series of fashion-inspired, editorial and creative portrait concepts developed specifically for the château and its surroundings.

Clothing, styling and props will be carefully selected to complement the historic interiors, period furnishings, gardens and nearby locations.

Some sessions will be elegant and classical, while others will offer opportunities for more contemporary, dramatic or experimental photography.

Working with two versatile models will allow us to create a wider variety of images and concepts, including individual portraits, movement-based photography and carefully composed scenes involving both models.

Sessions will be arranged in small groups, giving each photographer the space and time to communicate with the models, direct poses and develop their own interpretation of each concept.

The aim is not for everyone to produce the same photographs, but to help each participant create a distinctive and personal body of work.

Natural Light, Harsh Sun and Shadow Control

The strong early-summer light of southern France can be beautiful, but it can also present challenges.

You will learn how to work confidently with window light, open shade, backlighting and direct sunlight.

We will also demonstrate the practical use of reflectors, diffusers and careful positioning to control contrast and produce clean, intentional images in a variety of lighting conditions.

Creative Flash and Movement

Selected sessions will introduce creative flash techniques, including on-camera and off-camera flash, shutter drag, rear-curtain synchronisation and combining flash with ambient light.

These techniques can bring movement, energy and atmosphere to an image, offering a very different visual approach from traditional natural-light portraiture.

Our experienced models will play an important role in these sessions, using controlled movement and expression to help create dynamic and visually striking photographs.

Mirepoix and the Surrounding Countryside

Located close to Château La Commanderie, the medieval town of Mirepoix offers colourful façades, timber-framed buildings, covered walkways and historic streets.

Its distinctive architecture provides an excellent setting for environmental portraiture, street-inspired fashion and visual storytelling.

The surrounding Lauragais countryside will offer further opportunities to work with rural landscapes, open spaces and the softer evening light of southern France.
