The French Experience workshop with Wilf James and Espen Lossius

Shooting will be in a range of styles from landscape, nature and local architecture and there is also an introduction to fashion with at least one English speaking model, During all shoots you will get direct one to one and group tuition in the use of light, both natural and studio, posing and location selection from both Wilf and Espen. Whatever your level of experience you will be guided through natural light shooting and using flash in indoor and outdoor sets. All lighting equipment is provided.

The workshop welcomes photographers of all levels and no specific level of expertise or previous experience is expected. The aim of the course is to provide you with a set of skills and techniques that you can use to improve your photography of landscape, local architecture models and lighting no matter what type of equipment you use. You don’t need the latest expensive cameras – all levels are welcome.

There will be an emphasis on training the eye to see photographic opportunities, as well as ideas and techniques to enable you to make the most of the locations. The course will be a mix of lecture, practical work, in house competition and group discussion.

The workshop is about exploration and moving out of your comfort zone to take great pictures. In a friendly, open environment, we aim to inspire you to get more pleasure and fun from your photography for years to come.

Detailed Itinerary – as a guide – however days may change.

Saturday – Arrivals Day.

As members arrive they can have a laid back afternoon around the house and pool and get settled in. Every arrival is greeted by members already there. The evening will be one of sampling French cuisine and fine wine whilst getting to know each other and discussing the week ahead.

Sunday

Chance to explore and shoot around the Domaine and get to know the property a little. Wilf and Espen will provide guidance in the locations within the Domain or close by in the wonderful rolling countryside. In the afternoon a variety of looks will be set up to allow you to get used to working with the models, lighting and props. With our model we will use period costumes to reflect the setting of the Domaine and the use of natural light and off camera flash.

Monday

Following on from Sunday the morning will allow the completion and honing of any shooting / lighting setups. After lunch we continue to explore the exquisite architecture, interior and exterior of the house and grounds. There are so many locations and hidden corners of this magical domaine you will never tire of backdrops for your shots. Evening shoot of the beautiful surrounding countryside as the sun sets (please note this maybe scheduled for different evenings depending on the light).

Tuesday

Early morning trip to the ancient walled Cité of Carcassonne. This is very much a tourist haven so an early start is essential, we will photograph from afar before visiting and photographing inside the Cité itself. There are many opportunities within the walls to photograph the architecture and local customs. We will lunch at one of the many restaurants within the Cité. After lunch we will head back to the Domaine for a personal afternoon, either to discuss progress so far or to take time out.

Wednesday

Members day! By mid-week you will now have an idea of how diverse our location is – we are secluded and surrounded by stunning countryside however we are in easy reach of small villages with that very lovely distinctive French flavour.  Your chance to explore the locality, shooting your own images of the landscape and Domaine. Transport will be available in the afternoon for anyone wanting to explore further a-field. At all times Wilf and Espen will be on hand to answer any questions and offer direction.

Thursday

Personal Shooting for the Competition. We will head off to one of the many villages of Les Corbières. The village of Lagrasse is a favourite but there is such a varied choice.  Photographers can wander off on their own or split into small groups or be guided by Wilf and Espen. The goal here is to either shoot with our model with a view to nailing the images they want to present in the final competition or again explore and capture the beauty of the impressive French southern architecture. After lunch we will use the rugged backdrop of Les Corbières for a different style location shoot.

Friday

A final opportunity to set up and capture a “themed look” with your model around the beautiful house and grounds of Le Domaine des Jasse.  We try to arrange for a vintage car to be available for the model shoot and this will be confirmed nearer to the workshop. After lunch critiques of images shot over the week and judging of the “fun” competition. Great prizes to be won. Evening Meal together and drinks.

Saturday

Last lazy breakfast together and any last questions and finish up 10.00 before transportation to airport.

How we can help

Our base will be Domaine des Jasse. Les Jasses is about escape. The current owner gave up being a lawyer and came here to become an artist. Three cars a day pass the end of the drive which leads to a landscape unchanged since Roman times. The rooms and bathrooms are large and the house is filled with antiques and art collected over a lifetime by the owner. The domaine sleeps 21 in comfort, grandeur and style; yet it was for centuries a place of contemplation and still feels like a haven from the world .

In the early 18th century Louis XIV granted Domaine des Jasses to the Ursuline nuns, provided they prayed daily for him and his family. These Letters Patent of King Louis are held by the Archive Departement de l’Aude a copy of which can be seen on the website: Domaine des Jasse.
