Itinerary – Victoria Falls and Hwange

Day 1 – 2: Departure for Zimbabwe arrival at Victoria Falls

Departure at the end of the afternoon from Europe and night flight to Johannesburg.

Transit through Johannesburg in the morning to continue your trip to Victoria Falls International Airport where you will be greeted and transferred to Victoria Falls Safari Lodge. Afternoon of relaxation and wildlife observation.
Dinner “free” and night at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge. Bed & Breakfast.

Victoria Falls is a small town of about 30,000 inhabitants that has formed around the famous Victoria Falls, which were discovered by the no less famous English explorer David Livingstone in 1855. This small town on the border with Zambia had, up to very recently, the reputation for being an open city and a crossing point for wildlife, as it was not uncommon to come across troops of baboons and elephants walking down the streets between hotels.
Although located only a 15 minutes drive from the centre of the small town of Victoria Falls, the eponymous Victoria Falls Safari Lodge allows you to immerse immediately in the mood of the bush. The lodge’s location, on a high plateau overlooking the Zambezi National Park, offers a panoramic view of over a water hole where animals come to drink. A special atmosphere emerges at sunset as, from the bar as well as from most of the rooms, you are able to admire this incredible view. All rooms are of very good quality with a balcony and private bathroom.

Day 3: Victoria Falls

This day is organised to allow you visit and photograph the Victoria Falls. You will have free time to take part yourself, if you choose, in the various optional activities proposed locally around the falls (e.g. flight over the falls by helicopter, cruise on the Zambezi, rafting, etc.)

Day 5 to day 7: Hwange National Park

Hwange National Park is the oldest and largest national park in Zimbabwe. Established in 1949 and covering an area of 14,650 sqkm (i.e. a surface close to that of Belgium or Wales), this park is completely open and serves as a refuge to the largest diversity of mammals in the world with 19 species of large herbivores and 8 different species of large carnivores. More than 400 types of birds and 50 types of raptors have also been identified. As this park is an extension of the Kalahari ecosystem, large migrations take place between Chobe and Hwange
(which includes water holes created nearly a century ago) and it is possible to see very large herds of elephants as the entire ecosystem counts between 20,000 and 75,000 of them.

These days will be spent exploring Hwange National Park and its flora and fauna. They will provide the opportunity to indulge in wildlife observation and photography with game drives in a 4×4 vehicle.
Night at the seasonal camp. Full board & game drives included.

Your seasonal camp in Hwange National Park is a small mobile camp repositioned each year to offer the best chances of meeting the wildlife of this very large park. The canvas tents include everything you need
(comfortable beds, bathrooms and en-suite toilet) to rest from your days exploring the park and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of Hwange.

camp

A typical day on safari starts with a refreshing cup of tea or coffee and biscuits at dawn to follow the rhythm of the savannah waking up.
The morning game drive leaves the lodge/camp as soon as it is permitted to drive in the Reserve with the intention of finding predators that will go hunting or have returned from their nocturnal activities.
As the sun rises the light goes through the full colour spectrum from blue to red to yellow, which represent “golden hours” to take photographs that capture a special atmosphere.
Breakfast is either served in the bush, during a break in the game drive, or upon return to the lodge/camp.
The middle of the day is the time when guests like to review their pictures and chill out.
After lunch, there is an afternoon game drive which entails looking for new animals or returning to some of the Big Fives spotted in the morning.
The light of the sunset facilitates stunning landscape shots before a sundowner and a return to the lodge/camp to a candlelit dinner near the campfire.

One aspect that differentiates days of safari in Zimbabwe from those in most other African countries is the possibility to engage in walking safaris (or “bush walks”). This means that when interesting animals are far from the tracks and it is difficult to approach them by car, the guide (specialized in this area, used to such approaches and armed) can offer you a walk through the savannah of few minutes to an hour or two, to position yourself a few dozen metres from lions, wild dogs, etc. and a few metres from big elephants. These opportunities for walking safaris are optional and you undertake them only if you so wish. If this is your choice, the safety instructions of your specialist guide should be scrupulously respected. Your guide may help you carry your photographic equipment or it may be left in a secure part of the car.

Day 8: From Hwange National Park to Mana Pools National Park

After your breakfast, transfer by road to Hwange National Airport (2.5 hours game drive “en route”) for a flight by light aircraft to the main airstrip of Mana Pools (45 minutes) where you will be met by your driver guide and be driven to the seasonal camp, mounted on the shores of the Zambezi river.
Game drive “en route” arriving at your camp for lunch.
Game drive in the afternoon.
Night at the seasonal camp. Full board. Walking safaris, canoe trips & game drives included.
Note: since the times of charter flights organized for private transfers from one park to another may vary, it is possible that the departure from Hwange National Park camp occurs at dawn.

The National Park of Mana Pools lies on the southern banks of the Zambezi river. It was the first park in Zimbabwe to have been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1984. It is the meandering Zambezi that formed the shorelines, islands, sandbars and landscape of open forests of this park. Mana Pools owes its name to four water-filled depressions made in an old river bed and which now serve as shelters for groups of hippos.
The park is famous for its very large elephants, its buffaloes, hippos, wild dogs and its big cats. This is the only park where the author of this booklet has had the opportunity to observe three different leopards during the same day and to make portraits of elephants with a super wide angle lens. More than 380 varieties of birds have also been recorded in Mana Pools.
The seasons have a significant impact on the life of this park as, from May to November, the dry season leads many animals to converge towards the Zambezi and the water holes. This offers multiplied opportunities for observation and photography of the wildlife.

Day 9 to day 11: Mana Pools National Park

The focus of these days will be the discovery of Mana Pools National Park and its flora and fauna. There will be ample opportunities to indulge in wildlife photography with game drives in 4×4 vehicles, walking safaris and walking approaches of some animals of the park (optional) and canoe trips (optional) on the Zambezi.
Night at the seasonal camp. Full board. Walking safaris, canoe trips & game drives included.

photographers

The camp where you will be staying in the Mana Pools National Park is a small seasonal camp that can accommodate 2 to 12 guests. It is located on the banks of the Zambezi river so as to maximize the chance of observing and photographing large wildlife while providing a beautiful view of the river and the show of nature that takes place there.
The canvas tents specially mounted for the dry season have comfortable beds and bathrooms and en-suite toilet. Paraffin lamps illuminate the camp at night.  Meals are cooked, and the bread baked fresh daily, over the camp fire. This organization allows a personal immersion in the nature of Mana Pools and for you to experience the atmosphere that may have been similar to the one the first visitors of the park enjoyed. If you wish you can also enjoy (free) canoes trips on the Zambezi, which flows peacefully along Mana Pools, to observe and photograph from the river the large animals coming to drink or cross the water.
