Carcassonne Cité Tour with Damien Demolder

Carcassonne – with all this history and architecture, throw in a baguette and a few croissants and you have the perfect backdrop to put your photographic creativity into overdrive.

Some may already have heard of, or seen images of the walled Cité of Carcassonne, the most impressive preserved fortified town in Europe – this is where we will be photographing along with the “new” town of Carcassonne which is at least 800 years old.

Carcassonne, a hilltop town in southern France’s Languedoc area, is famous for its medieval citadel, La Cité, with numerous watchtowers and double-walled fortifications. Since 1997 La Cité has been classed by UNESCO A World Heritage Site

The first walls were built in Gallo-Roman times, with major additions made in the 13th and 14th centuries. Château Comtal, a 12th-century castle within the Cité, offers archaeological exhibits and a tour of the inner ramparts.

The workshop is about exploration and moving out of your comfort zone to take great pictures. In a friendly, open environment, we aim to inspire you to get more pleasure and fun from your photography for years to come.

During our trip we’ll explore the ancient, and slightly less ancient, sights of this celebrated city, taking in the stunning architecture, the people, the history and the incredible views. To create a collection of stunning photographs we’ll spend time thinking about the magical light of the South of France and how we can make the most of it by really paying attention to the way it lifts and shapes aspects of our pictures. We’ll look at how careful composition can create depth to engage the viewer and to draw attention to our subject, and we’ll sharpen all our photographic skills as we dedicate these days to learning more and practicing new ways of seeing.

You will get plenty of one-to-one time with Damien, who will discuss scenes and ways of capturing them before we shoot and then will assess how well we met our aims as we move from one challenge to the next. We will have fun as we go but we will definitely push our photography and the way we think about taking pictures forward significantly over the weekend.

We recommend to bring light clothing and a rainproof windcheeter, good walking shoes or comfortable trainers. There will be a fair amount of walking but the great thing about France are the numerous cafés to stop and refuel.

You will need:

Any kind of camera system will be fine for this workshop, but be aware that you will need to be able to carry it all day. I’d recommend lightweight systems, or not too many lenses. You won’t need very long focal lengths, so concentrate on lenses between 24mm and 100mm. You probably won’t need a flash gun, but a tripod might be useful for specific trips to shoot the ancient city walls first thing and last thing in the day – and if you fancy some night photography. You’ll be able to do these things without a tripod too of course, just with higher ISO settings.

You will definitely need lots of memory card space and a two or three spare batteries – as well as your charger.

It isn’t necessary to own a sophisticated camera system for this trip. A compact camera, a bridge camera or even a mobile phone will all work as well as modern mirrorless model.
