World Photo Adventure – Africa Safari 2024 – Autumn 2024. 13th – 20th October, 2024
- The climate in Masai Mara can be lush all year round, but there are some parts of the year that are better than others when it comes to wildlife photography. In the middle of the rain season there are issues like cars can easily become stuck making game drives difficult, and so on. In Masai Mara June, July, August, September and October has the best weather for wildlife safaris and photography opportunities. October is just before the brief rain season that begins in November, this can offer opportunities like rain showers and the amazing skies that comes with them. This of course offers great images for us who are lucky enough to sit in a dry but open car, and with a perfect view the animals. Pleasant temperatures with warm and dry weather, and mostly clear blue skies above.
- We have permission to drive in multiple conservancies, so you do not have to put up with many people and cars surrounding the animals and ruining your shots.
Your tutor will be Espen Lossius who not only is an expert in his field and on many aspect of photography.

A stunning image of one of the big five, usually seen in all it’s splendor but this shot does sum up life at times!
A word, or two, from your host and mentor Espen Lossius
I am the co-owner of World Photo Adventure. We have been leading several successful photography workshops every year for the last seven years, of which about half were regarding wildlife photography. I have achieved both gold and silver medals in the Norwegian national championship in photography, in multiple categories, including wildlife photography.
I have been a full-time professional photographer for 10 years, with both portraits and wildlife photography as my passion and specialty.
I am fluent in both English and Norwegian and speak a very tiny bit French.
Practical advice:
The camp is in the wilderness, and wildlife are always close to the camp. This means wildlife is sometimes even inside the camp or coming straight through the camp. We have members of the Masai tribe employed as guards to help our guests stay safe, and chase away dangerous animals. It is still of the utmost importance that you always follow their directions and the directions of our staff, to help us to help you stay safe at all times.
We have warm days and potentially chilly evenings and mornings, so pack your clothes wisely.
Sunscreen is a must! We always try to have some sunscreen available for our guest, but having your own sunblock is smart.
You will need:
- Sunscreen / Sunblock: We are at high elevation 2400 meters above sea level, so the sun is very strong. Sunblock with a high factor is recommended regardless of how well you take to the sun.
- Warm clothes for chilly evenings. It can get quite chilly in the evening and early morning, so bring enough clothes to stay warm and dry. We also have launrdy facilities and staff will take care of any items of clothing that need washed
- Extra pair of shoes. If we do get rain, the ground becomes soft very quickly, which in turn leads to wet and dirty shoes and clothing. (Shoes can be cleaned and dried in the camp but having at least one extra pair is recommended.)
- You will definitely need lots of memory card space and a two or three spare batteries – as well as your charger.
Camera gear:
- Focal lengths between 70 – 600 mm are the most common.
- Most tele shots are at focal lengths 200-400 mm.
- Most wide shot are at focal lengths 70-200 mm.
- We do get extremely close to the animals, so even if you have just a cell phone, you will still get amazing pictures!
It isn’t necessary to own a sophisticated camera system for this trip. A compact camera, a bridge camera or even a mobile phone will all work as well as modern mirrorless model.
