Earlier this year my wife and I paid a visit to York. It was one of
those brilliantly sunny days that are so great, good to be alive
weather. Late morning and we decided a cup of coffee was in order. I
love candid snaps of people and in every town I know I have favourite
location and York is no exception. We went in and I carried out my
usual reconnaissance, looking for likely subjects and spotted this
lovely old lady. Trouble was the place was packed and the only spare
seats were on her table facing straight into brilliant low February
light, horrible.
Then as I nonchalantly studied the subject whilst deep in conversation
with Annie I realised that the old lady’s bowl of baked beans was
acting as a reflector and in spite of all the backlighting her face was
lifted and lit in the most theatrical way imaginable, in fact the
lighting was out of this world. Not only did it light her face which
should have been in deep shadow but it sparkled and created a starburst
of light from her fork. The sun shone through the translucent drop of
baked beans under her fork. It emphasised the steam coming from the
bowl, in fact it was perfect and all down to luck.
The joy of digital capture, B/W or colour. I must admit as previously
stated I am a B/W photographer; however for this shot I think the
colour is most successful.
